Bitcoin Pizza Day: Grab a Slice of Amazing Story

Ever heard of the world’s most expensive pizza? No, it’s not topped with caviar or gold flakes, it’s the Papa John’s pizzas! What makes this pizza so interesting? 2 pizzas were paid 10,000 BTC. Every May 22nd, we celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day, commemorating the time a hungry Floridian famously spent what’s nowadays known as outrageously big amount on two pizzas. Talk about a slice of history! But hey, in hindsight, was it a costly mistake or the best dinner deal ever? You decide!

The Story of Bitcoin Pizza Day

Let’s go back to 2010, May 22nd.

Laszlo Hanyecz, the Florida man, was craving some pizzas, and his order amounted to 10,000 BTC at the time. And because of his craving for pizza, a whole history was created!

On the Bitcoin Talk forum, Hanyecz reportedly reached out for help. “I’ll pay 10,000 Bitcoins for a couple of pizzas … like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day,” Hanyecz wrote.

‘’I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I’m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for Bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a ‘breakfast platter’ at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you’re happy!’’

Given Bitcoin’s value at the time, the order was worth around $41, which seemed like a fair amount to earn. Now, accepting the offer to deliver pizzas to Laszlo Hanyecz from a British man is considered the decision of a lifetime!

Bitcoin Pizza Day: From a Few Bitcoins to a Fortune

Nine months after the order, Bitcoin reached parity with U.S. dollars, making the two pizzas worth $10,000.

Five years afterwards or on one of the Bitcoin Pizza days, Bitcoin pizza reached the value of $2.4 million.

On May 22th, 2023, the value of Bitcoin was just over $26,850.

And this year, the 14th year after, the value of Bitcoin is estimated at some $61,396.00
